Just because you don’t have the patience to make an “aesthetic” grimoire or book of shadows doesn’t mean the people that do make “aesthetic” grimoires or books of shadows less of a witch.

If your grimoire or book of shadows is on a microsoft word document that’s great.

If your grimoire or book of shadows is written entirely on post it notes that’s swell.

If your grimoire or book of shadows is in a spiral bound notebook that’s dandy.

But don’t get mad when other people make THEIR grimoires or book of shadows APPEALING to THEMSELVES.

Small Candle Spells

Not every witch has the means to collect tons of exotic ingredients. Sometimes, all you have is a candle and a wish. So, I have put together 10 small candle spells. (The types of candles I am talking about are tea lights or small, tapered little fellas. Relatively cheap and easy to use!) Hope this becomes a resource for you all! Let’s get started! <3 Salt
BLACK CANDLE: Protection
You will need:
One Black Candle
Sheet of Paper
Pen/Pencil
Spellwork:
Write down what it is you wish to protect, be it your home, your family, yourself, etc.
Light the candle.
Chant the following ten times:
By the time this black candle has waned,
the blessing of protection be gained
by all that fall beneath its wax
be safely guarded from attack.
Until the next waxing moon appears,
protect all that I have written here.
Allow the candle to burn completely down and the wax to spread across the paper.
Fold it and keep it until the next waxing moon.
Repeat as often as needed.
WHITE CANDLE: Spirit Communication
You will need:
One White Candle
Photo of the Person you wish to speak to
Spellwork:
Before bed, light the white candle and focus on the flame. Let’s its warmth ignite the love you feel for the person you wish to communicate with.
Say their name allowed. Speak of the memories you have with them. Let the memory of them come to life in your mind.
When you are ready, recite the following spell:
Before I rest my head for the night,
I ask that my heart’s call to you,
(say their name), be answered.
In dreams, let us be together again
and share the embrace of love.
I await your visit
and, for it, you have my deepest thanks.
Blow out the candle and visualize their face in your mind’s eye.
Once the wax has cooled, place it and the picture together near your bed. You are free to sleep. Enjoy the visit!
PINK CANDLE: Self-Love
You will need:
One Pink Candle
Piece of paper (cut into a heart shape)
Pencil or pen
Spellwork:
On the heart paper, write down the positive aspects and assets you have. It can be anything (from pretty eyes to being compassionate.) Fill up the paper and fold it into a half heart.
Hold it in your hands and shut your eyes. Deeply breathe, and focus on your pulse and the things you wrote. Focus on yourself.
Recite the following incantation:
I am who I am
flawed, challenging, human
I am who I am
soulful, in communion with the universe
I am who I will be
ever-changing and growing
And I bow to the purpose that resides in me.
Light the heart paper on fire, allow it to turn to ash, and blow out the candle.
Anoint your forehead and the center of your chest with hearts made of ash. Meditate on the self and what your purpose might me.
Anytime you feel the need to revisit self-love, use the ashes and light the candle again.
PURPLE CANDLE: Accessing Gifts and Talents
You will need:
One Purple Candle
Spellwork:
On the night of the New Moon, sit in a quiet, dark room. Light your candle and concentrate on expelling all the static energy from your mind.
Focus on your the gifts you would like to explore. An example? If you are drawn to Tarot, have your deck nearby and envision yourself shuffling the cards.
Repeat the following chant 13 times:
My mind is clear, my heart is too
Reveal my gifts, deep and true
Open your eyes and stare into the flame. Let the fire of inspiration illuminate the talent you want to access.
Invoke the gift by whispering:
On this night, and all nights to come,
I will open myself to this ancient power
and allow discovery of my true potential.
Blow out the candle and keep by your bedside. When you practice a gift or talent, light it until there is no more wax.
ORANGE CANDLE: Calling Your Inner Child
You will need:
One Orange Candle
Divinatory Tool (Suggest: Tarot or Oracle cards)
Spellwork:
Light the orange candle and begin shuffling your cards.
When you feel that you have shuffled enough, hold the cards in your hand and focus on the flames.
Say the following spell:
Bring future to past
with this candle’s light
and provide for me
childish insight.
One card to tell me of my woes,
another about the child within,
a third cast to bring us together
so that we may begin again.
Draw three cards. The first will represent your position right now (who you are and what you have been going through); the second will represent your inner child and what insights they can provide through their innocence. The third and final card will show you what will happen if you allow the present you and your inner child join together.
Light the candle whenever you need guidance from your inner child again.
LIGHT BLUE CANDLE: Fortune and Glory
You will need:
One Light Blue Candle
Money (coins or paper money)
An Award or piece of Recognition (trophy, certificate, etc.)
Spellwork:
Anytime on a Sunday (the day where workings for wealth, achievement, goals, and promotions correspond), place your candle between your representations of fortune and glory.
Put one hand on each item, and say:
I humbly ask for the Universe and all the powers within it to look upon these representations of fortune and glory. I light this candle to honor you and ask for the following blessings…
Light your candle and return your hands to rest on your items. Recite:
By the light of this flame,
sweet fortune I do claim.
Wealth and wisdom I do gain.
By warmth of this flame,
glory granted to my name.
Recognition I do gain.
Allow the candle to burn until there is no more wax. Collect what is left, store in a jar, and keep in a place you conduct business.
YELLOW CANDLE: Invoking the Spirit of Air
You will need:
One Yellow Candle
Spellwork:
At 3 PM, go outside and bathe in the light of the middle of the day. Light your candle and place it in front of you.
Fisting your hands, place them on either side of the candle and say the following incantation:
Here and now, I call the element of Air. Summer breeze and roaring wind, echoing melody and lifting wings, ever-dancing. I call you forth to infuse my intention with your swirling fits of both song and silence. Carry my will on your back and raise my purpose into your sky. Breath and cloud, sound and song. Air, I call you to me.
Open your fists and allow for the spirit of Air to translate through your palms and into your center.
Let the candle burn for five minutes and then blow it out, keeping it when you need it again.
GREEN CANDLE: Invoking the Spirit of Earth
You will need:
One Green Candle
Spellwork:
At night, go outside and bathe in the light of the moon. Light your candle and place it in front of you.
Fisting your hands, place them on either side of the candle and say the following incantation:
Here and now, I call the element of Earth. Soil of fertility and growth, fecund source of stability, stillness and health. I call you forth to filter away all that is impure, and to stand rooted in this world. Mountain and dust, footstep and stone. Earth, I call you to me.
Open your fists and allow for the spirit of Earth to translate through your palms and into your center.
Let the candle burn for five minutes and then blow it out, keeping it when you need it again.
DARK BLUE CANDLE: Invoking the Spirit of Water
You will need:
One Blue Candle
Spellwork:
At twilight, go outside and bathe in the light of the fading sun. Light your candle and place it in front of you.
Fisting your hands, place them on either side of the candle and say the following incantation:
Here and now, I call the element of Water. Tranquil and powerful, rippling and deep, abundant resource of life. I call you here to infuse my intention. Wash my will in your flow, carry my purpose on your current. Dewdrop and lake, clarity and storm. Water, I call you to me.
Open your fists and allow for the spirit of Water to translate through your palms and into your center.
Let the candle burn for five minutes and then blow it out, keeping it when you need it again.
RED CANDLE: Invoking the Spirit of Fire
You will need:
One Red Candle
Spellwork:
At sunrise, go outside and bathe in the light of the new dawn. Light your candle and place it in front of you.
Fisting your hands, place them on either side of the candle and say the following incantation:
Here and now, I call the element of Fire. Heat and flame, passion and love, anger and wildfire. I call you forth to burn away all that impedes my highest vision and to enact change in the world. Lightning and hearth, heart and forge. Fire, I call you to me.
Open your fists and allow for the spirit of fire to translate through your palms and into your center.
Let the candle burn for five minutes and then blow it out, keeping it when you need it again.

Tips on Grimoire Organization

Please note that if you are using a hard bound notebook or journal, adding in additional pages will bulk up your book, like so: (these are the exact same journals, btw)

- Envelopes. Let’s say you’re doing a section on Tarot in your Grimoire, and you want to include a few Tarot spreads, but you don’t want to waste two or three pages. Glue an envelope onto one of your pages to make a “pocket” where you can store little cards or papers with the tarot spreads written on them.

- Pockets. Similar to the envelope idea. If you have a page, or section for example, on herbal teas, you can make a pocket out of a piece of paper to keep your current favorite tea recipes in.

- Dividers, Cover Pages and Ribbons. If you’re like me and you like to have “sections” in your grimoire, you can easily make dividers by gluing a sheet of paper in your book (to make it heavier to make the sections stand out more). You can go further by turning your divider into a cover page for that section. And if you don’t like the idea doing that, you can always glue a ribbon, or a string, to the spine of your book to act as a bookmark.

- Double pages. I always had a problem with “wasting” pages in my grimoire. For example, my page on consecrating and charging. These two concepts are very similar to me, and I didn’t want two page stating the same thing. So, what I did was write out all my information on charging on a separate sheet of paper, then glued the top of that page into my grimoire. This way I could flip up the page on charging (as if it were on a clipboard) and have my page on consecrating underneath.

- Extended pages. Similar to the one above. In my Crystal section of my Grimoire, I decided to write out a chart that let me search for crystals by intention. So I drew my chart on a long sheet of paper, then folded it over (side to side) so that it fit comfortably in my book, then I just glued one side down into the book.

- Brochures. In my Elements section, I had a ton of information I wanted to write down, but I didn’t want each element to have more than two pages. So I used a piece of computer paper and folded it into a brochure (or into thirds) and glued it into the book so that the flaps would open and give me double the space to write.

- Clear Tape. There are many times where i finished a page in my grimoire only to find out there was a section that I left out. A simply way to fix this was with clear tape. I would write my forgotten bit of into on a separate piece of paper and then use clear tape to tape one side of the paper to my page. This allows me to flip the paper back and forth without covering up anything that I had written.

So I’ve decided that it is probably about time for me to do an About Me Post so here goes nothing:

I am a Christian Witch, I serve the Holy Trinity, Father, son and Holy spirit,

I believe in Christ’s death on the cross for my sins and His resurrection three days later, I believe that through him my sins are washed away and that I have been given new life.

I believe that the Holy Spirit has been given to use to guide us and grant us power to do God’s work and that it is up to us to learn to use it,

I believe that there have been two Holy works handed down to us mortals, The one being the written word of God and the second being Creation.

I believe that the Bible is infallible and that all answers can be revealed through meditation of its pages.

I believe that God can and will reveal new tidbits of wisdom to any who listen even if they don’t follow him and that it is up to us to discern its interpretation, all written work can have some truth.

I believe that apart from angels and demons there are other spirits at work in this world that either seek to help.or to hurt us.

I believe in the Saints and that God uses them to help and communicate with us mortals.

My personal goals as Christian witch are

I will seek to always love my enemies and pray for those that hurt me for I seek to bring everyone into the knowledge of the Savior.

I will recognize that I am still Human and imperfect and don’t have all of life’s answers but that will never stop me from chasing after the One who made me and gleaning wisdom from him.

I am a Christian Witch and these are my most basic beliefs I enjoy questions and being challenged please ask away, Remember if you are in need of help in any way I am here for you.

Y’all asked for it so y’all gonna get it! I’mma start off with the barebones essentials and work my way to basic definitions. Sit down on something comfy and get yourself your warm beverage of choice and maybe grab a notebook because here goes.

What are runes?

Runic alphabets have been around since about 150 AD and used as a writing system by a lot of Germanic languages. These systems were eventually phased out, slowly but surely, with the progressive Christianisation that started around 700-1100 AD. The three most commonly known (and used?) Are the Elder Futhark, the Younger Futhark and Futhorc.

Runes aren’t, themselves, broadly meant for divination, thought there are a few passages in the Eddas that mention Odin “finding” and using them.

Alright, so which alphabet should I use?

Whichever one you want! I prefer using the Elder Futhark, because it’s the first alphabet I learned and got familiar with, but that doesn’t at all stop you from using the Younger Futhark or Futhorc. I’d heavily suggest making sure you read up on the differences in each alphabet though; Ansuz, for example, won’t look the same, mean the same or even be called the same from one alphabet to another.

Familiarize yourself with each of them if you want/can, and choose based on your own preferences and criteria. Always work with what feels best for you!

But I’m not really familiar with Germanic traditions / I’m a baby witch, should or can I use runes for divination?

This is the concept that got my goat real good the first time. You do not, in any way, shape or form, need to be experienced to cast runes. This is a notion that is outdated and perpetuated by gatekeepers and exclusionists. No one gives a flying flip how long you’ve been practicing witchcraft, or if you even practice at all!

Divination should be seen as a tool to further yourself and/or your craft. It can be used by itself or in conjunction with other activities, practices or beliefs. I was 15 when I started learning about runes (dear god that was literally over ten years ago) and I had no idea what I was doing back then. I read up as much as I could about the system I was wanting to use and, once I was comfortable with it, I started doing small readings.

It shouldn’t matter how new or familiar you are to divination, rune casting or Germanic traditions. If rune casting feels right to you, you are more than free to use whatever divination method feels right to you.

What should I do before I start a reading?

As a Norse Pagan, I usually invoke my patron deities (Baldr and Loki, in this case), as well as Odin and Freyja, sometimes Gullveig/Heiðr because reasons. I have no idea whether or not this has any actual bearing on the reading itself, as mine were as accurate before I converted as they are now.

Making sure you’re in a quiet and/or comfortable space is also a good idea, even if that just means popping in some earphones and listening to something that makes you focus and feel calm.

This is also a good time to mention that cleansing your runes (stone, bone, wood or otherwise) is a very good idea. I typically do this with candles, incense, a bowl of water and a point of quartz for each element. I don’t do this nearly as often as I probably should, since most people suggest cleansing them after each reading… but, whatever, being lax with that hasn’t bitten me in the ass so far. So if you’re a spoonie, don’t worry: cleanse your runes when you feel they need to be cleansed, and that’s it.

Alright, I think I’m ready; how do I start reading?

Let me start by saying that the bullshit about never reading yourself? It’s just that. Bullshit. Do readings on yourself if you want to. Who the hell is going to stop you. Do whatever you want.

On that note, there are a few ways to cast runes, though these probably aren’t close to being the only ones:

Intuitively choosing the stones
Lay the runes down on a flat surface and let your hand hover over them and pick out the ones that feel right. You can either pick them in order of the spread you’re using, or place the runes where you feel they belong on the spread.
Throwing the stones
Make sure you have a large flat surface to work with (preferably the floor honestly) where you won’t drop, scatter or lose a rune. You can use a mat underneath, and read the stones that fall on the corresponding positions in the spread or circle. (You can find many of these with a quick google search, or make your own mat!) Otherwise, you can take the first stones you see facing up and lay those out according to your spread.
Picking them blindly
Either you or the person you’re reading pull stones blinding out of a pouch, bag or other container, and lay them out according to the spread you’re using. Pretty straightforward.
If you can think of another method, literally nothing is stopping you from using that instead. The runes are acting as a universal translator for whatever it is you’re tapping into. They’re just a tool to receive a message. How you choose to receive that message is completely up to you!

So I’ve got my runes laid out, now what?

Now comes the fun part. I can only really give you a good run-down of the Elder Futhark, and though it’s a good starting point, I would highly advise you do your own research on whatever alphabet you want to use. Wikipedia is a great place to start, but don’t stop there: look at several different websites and lists and compare. Combine and condense the information for yourself, and get to learn the definitions and meanings for yourself!

gifts in the form of sacrifice or generosity, contracts, partnerships
reversed/opposed: greed, isolation and dependence, over-sacrifice

ᚹ Wunjo • joy
comfort, pleasure, companionship, possibility of going over the top
reversed: sorrow and alienation, growing distance, raging frenzy

ᚺ Hagalaz • hail
wrath of nature, destruction for the sake of creation, natural order
reversed: natural disasters, powerlessness, suffering

ᚾ Naudiz • need
strength/growth from hardships, survival, determination
reversed: deprivation and emotional starvation, constraints/restraints

ᛁ Isaz • ice
challenges and frustration, psychological block, anticipation
reversed/opposed: can oppose other runes with malice and treachery

ᛃ Jera • good year
hard work is fruitful, peace, happiness and relief, breaking the cycle
reversed: sudden setbacks and bad timing

ᛈ Pertho • vagina
secrets, mysteries, undiscovered abilities, choosing your own path
reversed: stagnation, isolation and loneliness

ᛇ E/ihwaz • yew tree
strength, stability, endurance, trustworthiness, your goal is realistic

shield, the instinct to protect yourself/others, connection to the gods

reversed: moving without change, fruitless effort, helpelessness

ᛞ Dagaz • dawn
breakthroughs and clarity, security, power to change and grow, the ideal
reversed/opposed: endings and coming round full circle

ᛟ Othila • inheritance
ancestral property, what is most important, spiritual heritage and safety
reversed: slavery, homelessness, bad karma, what one is unwillingly bound to

Phew! What a list. These are just brief descriptions and meanings that I’ve been able to compile and condense over the years.

But, what does “opposed” mean?

I see where you’re coming from. As a baby diviner, I, also, was confused by this. But let me explain how I’ve come to understand it!

Sometimes, if you’re doing a set spread, you’ll have a spot for things like, “what will oppose you”, or “what you need to avoid”. Things like that. If, say, a rune like Suwilo was found in something like that, you’d want to try and keep a sharp mind to avoid deceptions or letting yourself be too gullible.

When runes don’t have a reversed form, their position in your spread will usually determine what they mean. (Though really this is true for literally any rune.)

Anything else I should know?

The best advice I can ever give anyone is to always do what you feel is right. If you find yourself wondering, “Should I do this? Is this right?” If you question yourself at all, you should probably not to the thing and go with something else.

It’s also important to mention that the names I have for the runes may not be the ones that you’ve learned to know them by; a lot of runes can go by different names depending on who you ask and where you look. Do your research, and know the runes by the names you feel are best! (And preferably historically accurate.)

the waxing crescent moon is the moon we experience right after the new moon, so the moon phase we’re in right now and until june 19th. im doing my own research on information about the waxing moon, so i thought i’d share.

the waxing crescent moon brings with it a fresh energy, an energy that can be used in many ways.

here are some things to do on the waxing crescent moon:

set/ declare your intentions

set your intentions for this new moon to the next full moon or next new moon and write them down. leave it on your altar or somewhere you see often, or set reminders on your phone for daily things you need to do to complete your goals.

write down any ideas that come to you

fresh energy brings new ideas to conceptualize. write down any ideas that come to you or try your hand at automatic writing (some information on how to here)

practice creativity

its a great time to be creative. if you are an artist, now is a good time to make art or come up with art ideas. if you’re not an artist, there are still more ways you can be practice creativity

send off your desires into the world

talk to the universe about your desires. start by saying “dear universe” and end with some sort of goodbye. or, have a glass of crystal, moon, or sun water close at hand and light a candle, write down your desires on a small piece of paper, burn the paper, burn the letters to ashes while your fingers are holding the paper, and put the ashes into your cup of water and drink the cup of water

use the law of attraction

attraction is very powerful during the waxing crescent moon. start doing visualizations and try to stay positive/ say positive affirmations. this will help you to attract the right things into your life.

do constructive magic

constructive means serving a useful purpose. so do a candle spell or say a chant that will be useful to you. i just looked up what exactly useful meant and its “able to be used for a practical purpose or in several ways.”

wealth/ success, good luck, friendship, wishes, desires, bringing wanted things into your life, constructive things, courage, good health, carve the word success into your candle with your athame and let it burn. for growth, attraction, creation/ creatvity, inspiration, production, drawing, increasing, courage, motivation, friendship, healing, luck, love power, gaining energy, growth, learning,

take action towards your goals and desires and journal about them

remember, no matter how much you desire something or dream or hope for something, it doesn’t just come to you by itself. you have to put in the work or seek it out yourself. and you’re more likely to achieve your goals if you have an organized and not too hard to accomplish plan. (take things step by step)

You don’t know everything. There’s a lot you don’t know about the universe and how it works. Your personal belief system is not a universal truth that everyone must follow. Saying people are foolish or “will learn eventually” because they subscribe to a different belief system than yours is rude and imperialistic. Don’t act like you’re a wise old sage with all the secrets figured out, because you’re only human, just like the rest of us.

Science still matters. While a lot of what we do seems like we’re skirting impossible, we are still physical beings in a physical world. Eating random plants, drinking potions with hazardous materials, and overall being really unsafe about your craft WILL still effect you no matter how much energy you raise. Your healing spell is going to have to metaphysically fight the fact that you just physically swallowed a rock. No positive energies are going to cancel that out.

There will ALWAYS be haters. Whether it be from outside people who think your craft is a self-delusion, or long-time witches who think your untraditional path is a disgrace, you can’t please everyone. There are as many ways to practice the craft as there are witches and then some. There’s no hate-free path, so just accept that and don’t give hate to other people for theirs; you know how it feels coming from other people so why give it to someone else?

Magic won’t solve all your problems. Magic is a very powerful spiritual tool, but it’s not going to solve everything. You will still need to reach out, take action, talk to people, lock your doors, etc. The witch whose first reaction to literally everything is to cast a spell with no followup, and only seeks out knowledge through divination and nothing else will still have a lot of problems because they’re so separated from the rest of the world.

Can someone explain how you burn an herb?
If something calls for mugwort, how do I burn it? Do I need it to be in oil form?

Let me tell you the best damn way to burn small amounts of herbs for a ritual.

A metal tea strainer just like the one above.

Put just a pinch of herbs inside. Hold the mesh over a candle for several moments. You will be able to see the herbs begin to burn. If you just need a little smoke, they will smoke immediately and go out quickly when removed from the flame.

If you need a lot of smoke, let the herbs turn in to embers (they will not really catch fire). In this form you can carry the tea strainer all around a room to smoke it out, or place it on a fire-safe surface such as a baking dish or pan so it can smolder safely.

Really only use a small amount of dried herbs!

When experimenting with burning herbs, I advise you to open a window. Rooms can get smokey really quickly and it isn’t mystical, it’s uncomfortable. Also try not to set off any smoke alarms.

If you do not have a strainer like this at home, they can be got for just a couple of dollars at any store with a kitchen section.
